Shane Perkins (Perko to his friends) was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1986. His father Daryl Perkins was a very talented track sprinter back in the 1960′s representing Australia at both the Olympic Games in 1964 and winning a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in 1966.
Although cycling was in his blood Perko initially played cricket, football and then basketball at a very high level aged 7 to 14. It wasn’t until the age of 14 that he jumped on his bike and enjoyed instant success winning the Victorian Sprint Championship.
Within three months of taking up cycling, he had qualified to compete at the U15 Australian National Championships in Sydney, there he won two gold medals and broke two Australian records in the process. It was clear to all that Perko was a huge talent and was destined for greatness.
Perko has continued to improve year after year taking out multiple Sprint & Keirin Australian Championship titles along with numerous UCI Track World Cup Sprint and Keirin victories. Following his Silver medal in the Sprint at the UCI Track World Championships in 2010 Perko went one better in 2011 when he took home gold in the Keirin at the World Championships.
As the current Keirin World Champion Perkins is now the hot favourite to take home a gold medal from the London 2012 Olympic Games. He hopes to represent Australia in the Sprint, Keirin and Team Sprint.
